Katie S.
Private tutor in Poulsbo, WA
Education
I graduated from Whitworth University in 2017 with a B.A. in English writing and a GPA of 3.6. I also minored in computer science and Spanish, which required me to study abroad in Guatemala for a month. Another major part of my college experience was working at the school newspaper for all four years, where I learned a lot about journalistic writing.
Experience
I worked at my university writing center, the Whitworth Composition Commons, for two years, and loved it. In this position, I helped college students with various writing projects for half-hour or hour-long one-on-one sessions, as well as giving various workshops in classroom settings. In my last semester of college, I taught a creative writing workshop once a week to a group of about 15 high school students. My co-teacher and I wrote the syllabus and worked with students to improve and practice many types of creative writing. I also tutored a middle school student for one semester, mainly in math, through a volunteer program at my school. I spent another semester as a TA for a creative writing class. I gave students feedback on their stories and poems, and hosted a session to workshop their final pieces. Volunteering or working in a tutor setting was one of the highlights of my four years of college. I love writing myself, but even more so I love helping other people improve their writing, or improve the way they think about writing and school and learning. I love coming alongside a student and working with them as a team, and seeing them understand something they might not have thought of before.
